Chipper Jones feels as though he’s returned to the 1990s.
Those were giddy times for the Atlanta Braves, who won their division just about every season and often made it to the World Series – five times by the time the decade was done.
Well, look who’s making an improbable bid for the playoffs.
Yep, it’s the Braves, the franchise that fell on hard times after the last of its record 14 straight division titles in 2005.
A 4-0 shutout of the Florida Marlins on Monday night was Atlanta’s 15th victory in 17 games, closing the gap on Colorado in the wild-card race to two games. The Braves haven’t even given up on chasing down defending World Series champion Philadelphia in the NL East, pulling within four games of the division leader.
There’s only six games left in the regular season, so Atlanta still faces long and longer odds to catch either team. But this late-season run has sure made things a lot more fun around the clubhouse for players who had almost forgotten what it was like to play meaningful games in September.

Chipper Jones and Garret Anderson highlighted the early power display that helped Derek Lowe feel less uneasy about his latest finger ailment and the possibility of reliving the nightmare that he’d experienced when he last stood on Citi Field’s mound.
It took the Braves just three innings to provide Lowe comfort and compile all of the runs that would encompass the 11-3 bashing that they handed the Mets at Citi Field on Monday night.
“A lot of this game is momentum, and if you can seize the momentum early and set the tone, you’ve got a good chance to win it,” said Jones, whose three-run homer capped the four-run second inning.

Curing Georgia of its strain of yellow fever isn’t as easy as taking a shot of antibiotics and drinking a gallon of orange juice.
The Bulldogs’ penalty flag affliction relapsed last week, despite the off-season effort to inoculate themselves.
Georgia had 13 penalties for 108 yards Saturday against South Carolina and finds itself in a familiar place, near the bottom of the Southeastern Conference in penalties.
“We had been doing pretty well with the penalties,” Georgia linebacker Rennie Curran said. “But sometimes things are going to happen, especially on defense, when you’re playing like your hair is on fire and flying to the ball. It’s something we have to clean up and we have to address and hold each other accountable.”

Chipper Jones’ return to the Braves’ lineup may have been further delayed on Wednesday night, when he aggravated his strained left groin muscle during an eighth-inning pinch-hit appearance.
After the Braves claimed their 6-5 walk-off win over the Mets, Jones revealed that he’d felt further discomfort while swinging and missing a pitch during his eighth-inning strikeout. The 37-year-old third baseman declared himself available to pinch-hit after taking numerous swings in the indoor batting cage.
“I’ll just take it day-by-day,” Jones said. “I took 100 swings [in the cage] and I didn’t feel it one time. That’s why I didn’t even think about it. But I guess there’s no simulating game-intensity swings. I’ll have to see how it feels tomorrow and see if I can play.”

The Falcons’ offense is as good as advertised: From their second play (a 43-yard run by RB Michael Turner) to their last (a 14-yard touchdown pass from QB Matt Ryan to TE Tony Gonzalez), Atlanta’s starters looked unstoppable. In just two series, the Falcons’ first-team offense accounted for 147 yards and two touchdowns.
Jason Smith has a lot of work to do: The Rams’ first-round draft pick (No. 2 overall) had some good moments, but he showed plenty of room for improvement. On back-to-back second-quarter plays, the offensive tackle gave up a sack and whiffed on a run block, receiving a holding penalty in the process.
