There is no secret to the Thrashers’ recent success.
It’s all about the goaltenders.
The Thrashers have won three straight, two by shutout, with Johan Hedberg and Ondrej Pavelec minding the net. The two of them have stopped a combined 106 of 110 shots in wins over Detroit, Carolina and Philadelphia. That’s a save percentage of .964.
“When they are on top of their games and they feel good about themselves, they want to play,” Thrashers coach John Anderson said. “We are blessed with two real good goalies right now.”
Remarkably, both rank in the top 10 in the NHL in save percentage. Hedberg, who earned his 12th career shutout Saturday against Philadelphia, is tied for second in the league with a .932 save percentage. He trails Buffalo’s Ryan Miller by just .001 point. Pavelec, who posted his second career shutout Wednesday in Detroit, is tied for eighth with a .921 percentage.

Joe Johnson made it two straight 30-point games, Josh Smith dominated during a decisive first-half run and Atlanta won its sixth in a row, beating Miami to reclaim a share of the NBA’s best record.
Johnson scored 30 points on the heels of a 35-point effort against Portland on Monday. Smith was all over the stat sheet: 16 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and two steals.
The Hawks (10-2) remained perfect at home and finally seemed to awaken the city of Atlanta to just how good this team might be. The first sellout of the season, 18,729, turned out at Philips Arena.

Mike Gonzalez has already drawn strong attention from a number of different teams looking for a closer and as he continues to determine where he’ll pitch next year, he’ll do so under the advisement of Scott Boras.
Two Major League sources have confirmed that Gonzalez recently chose Boras to serve as his agent. The veteran reliever had previously been represented by Dan Lozano of the Beverly Hills Sports Council.
With the addition of Gonzalez to his star-studded stable, Boras now possesses one of the top available relievers on this year’s free-agent market. The 31-year-old lefty posted a 2.42 ERA and limited opponents to a .209 batting average in the career-high 80 appearances he made for the Braves this past season.

Atlanta Thrashers star Ilya Kovalchuk may return to action less than three weeks after suffering a broken bone in his right foot.
Kovalchuk practiced Wednesday but left early. Coach John Anderson says Kovalchuk’s availability will be a game-time decision Thursday night at the New York Rangers.
Kovalchuk, the Thrashers’ captain, was expected to miss three to five weeks after suffering the injury on Oct. 24. He was tied for second in the league with nine goals when he was struck on the foot by a puck against the San Jose Sharks.

The quarterback nicknamed “Matty Ice” hasn’t been as cool or efficient in his sophomore season. Welcome to the harsh reality of the NFL, Matt Ryan.
The Atlanta Falcons quarterback has been intercepted seven times in the past three games, including three times in Monday night’s 35-27 loss at New Orleans. That performance caused the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Mark Bradley to question Ryan’s true potential.
“What if he’s a good NFL quarterback, but not a great in the making?” the columnist wrote.
The Redskins – Atlanta’s opponent Sunday at the Georgia Dome – would love to have a “good NFL quarterback” right now. After leading the Falcons to an 11-5 record and a surprise playoff berth last season, however, the bar has been set high for Ryan.

The Falcons were teetering on the edge of being another Saints blowout victim.
They survived a flurry, regrouped and then battled back to stand toe-to-toe with their NFC South rivals before coming up short.
The Saints were not in the clear until running back Pierre Thomas did a somersault into the endzone with 3:03 left in the game.
The Saints held on to prevail 35-27 over the Falcons before 70,088 fans on Monday night at the Superdome.
The Saints remain the only undefeated team in the NFC and go to 7-0. The Falcons dropped to 4-3 and fall three games behind the Saints with nine games to play.
