Chipper Jones’ return to the Braves’ lineup may have been further delayed on Wednesday night, when he aggravated his strained left groin muscle during an eighth-inning pinch-hit appearance.
After the Braves claimed their 6-5 walk-off win over the Mets, Jones revealed that he’d felt further discomfort while swinging and missing a pitch during his eighth-inning strikeout. The 37-year-old third baseman declared himself available to pinch-hit after taking numerous swings in the indoor batting cage.
“I’ll just take it day-by-day,” Jones said. “I took 100 swings [in the cage] and I didn’t feel it one time. That’s why I didn’t even think about it. But I guess there’s no simulating game-intensity swings. I’ll have to see how it feels tomorrow and see if I can play.”

Braves third baseman Chipper Jones has faced over 1,000 pitchers in his Major League career, but he has never seen anything quite like Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum. Lincecum is known as “The Freak” for good reason, because there really aren’t too many current or past pitchers he compares to.
The Braves will do their best to solve Lincecum on Wednesday, when they send their own young gun, Jair Jurrjens, to the mound to oppose him. Lincecum tossed eight shutout innings against the Braves in San Francisco in May and has baffled big league hitters all season long.

Courtesy of a sore right groin he gained on Monday night, it appears that Chipper Jones is going to get a chance to catch his breath and attempt to relocate the swing that has deserted him over the course of the past few weeks.
Jones played the remainder of Monday night’s 4-2 loss to the Cubs after tweaking the groin while running to first base on a fourth-inning single. But when he returned to Wrigley Field on Tuesday afternoon, the 37-year-old third baseman felt it would be best to rest for a day or two.

Chipper Jones is mired in one of the worst slumps of his career, and it’s certainly no coincidence that the Braves’ offense as a whole is struggling mightily.
Because, well, in this case the whole has not been better than the sum of its parts. Entering today’s series finale against the Red Sox here at steamy Turner Field, the Braves have lost 12 of their past 17 games. And scored two runs or fewer eight times in that dreadful stretch. Oh, it’s bad. They’ve lost nine of their past 14 at home, while averaging three runs in that stretch and scoring two runs or fewer eight times. Eight out of their past 14 home games, two runs or fewer, including three shutouts.

Rookie Tommy Hanson threw six scoreless innings despite a bout with the flu, and homers by Chipper Jones and Garret Anderson carried the Atlanta Braves past Boston 2-1 on Sunday, preventing a Red Sox sweep.
Pitching dominated the weekend series, with the teams combining for only nine runs in three games. Hanson (4-0) kept it going, limiting Boston to two hits on another sweltering day at Turner Field and extending his scoreless streak to 20 innings. This might have been the most impressive showing yet by the 22-year-old right-hander, one of baseball’s most promising pitchers. He was sent home a day earlier with the flu, and the Braves weren’t even sure if he’s be able to start.
