Georgia Tech’s talk of a simplified approach on defense is causing Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer to wonder what changes are coming this week.
For Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson, almost any change on defense would be welcome.
The No. 19 Yellow Jackets have allowed a combined 75 points in their last two games but somehow have managed to win both games.
Johnson says his defense will need better production against No. 4 Virginia Tech (5-1, 3-0) on Saturday night, prompting Beamer to say the Yellow Jackets are “difficult to prepare for.”
Johnson says the unit didn’t play as poorly as it seemed while giving up more than 400 yards in the first half of last week’s 49-44 win at Florida State.

Curing Georgia of its strain of yellow fever isn’t as easy as taking a shot of antibiotics and drinking a gallon of orange juice.
The Bulldogs’ penalty flag affliction relapsed last week, despite the off-season effort to inoculate themselves.
Georgia had 13 penalties for 108 yards Saturday against South Carolina and finds itself in a familiar place, near the bottom of the Southeastern Conference in penalties.
“We had been doing pretty well with the penalties,” Georgia linebacker Rennie Curran said. “But sometimes things are going to happen, especially on defense, when you’re playing like your hair is on fire and flying to the ball. It’s something we have to clean up and we have to address and hold each other accountable.”

Senior quarterback Joe Cox hasn’t played all that much, but Georgia coach Mark Richt says he already has the confidence of his teammates.
Richt said Thursday at Southeastern Conference media days that the majority of the team picked Cox as the best leader. He said they had confidence Cox could get the job done the past two years if Matthew Stafford had been injured. Richt said he could have a package that takes advantage of backup Logan Gray’s athleticism. Highly touted freshmen Zach Mettenberger and Aaron Murray could get some playing time if one of them secures the backup spot.
